Photography Tips While Traveling

Whether youre embarking on a family vacation or your family reunion, its going to be a special time. When we think of trips weve taken, we tend to remember them best with photographs. Heres some ideas to enhance your vacation as well as your memories of them.
Location Preparation
- Since you know where youre going (that's a minimum requirement), doesnt it make sense to check out the location before you get there? Create a list of attractions, accommodations, special points of interest, amusement areas, shopping, etc. A good source to help you do this is: the Places and Travel section of msn.com ( http://groups.msn.com/Browse?CatId=179)
- Figure out the photo opportunities for each appropriate venue. Anyone can take a thats nice picture of the kids at an amusement park. Wouldnt you rather capture a WOW photo that could be hung over the mantle?
- Depending on the location youre traveling to, you can see what books are written about them that highlight the best photo opportunities for the entire area
- If youre cyber-savvy, start at www.google.com and search using different combinations of: your destination, best photography locations, for images of the location, scenic spots, etc. The options are endless.
- If youre off to a non-big city area, scout out the national parks in the area. The great thing about national parks is that the scenery is usually so breathtaking, that a so-so shot looks outstanding, just because of the subject. Once in www.nps.gov, do a search on photos and you will be presented with terrific shots of all the parks
Photography Preparation
OK, youre either traveling through or youre at a wonderful location full of photo opportunities. You began this leg of your trip at the crack of dawn and as youre pulling into the most scenic overlook for 400 miles, the sun is just starting to crack the horizon.
You instinctively pull the car over, grab your camera and your tripod, and look for the best spot to set up. Just one tiny little problem YOU FORGOT YOUR TRIPOD! Rather than smack yourself on the forehead then, why not plan these things now, before you leave?
Your list should include AT LEAST the following consideration
- Do I need to repeat BRING YOUR TRIPOD? It doesnt take up much room, and as explained at www.best-family-photography-tips.com/tripod-photography.html, tripods allow you to capture entirely new categories of photographs that wont be possible without one
- Memory. Of course, bring all the memory you have, but also pack your portable storage device (explained at http://www.best-family-photography-tips.com/digital-photography-tutorial.html)
- If your camera has a hot shoe, bring your external flash, and any additional equipment that can be used to help with bounce flash
- Remember your external shutter release cable for those long exposures. How else are you going to get that angel-hair look of the waterfalls?
- Dont forget the basics like: batteries, battery charger, camera bag, and additional lenses and filters (if applicable on your camera)
- And just in case you need it, bring the manuals for your equipment.
Finally, dont get so wrapped up in taking perfect shots that you dont enjoy the trip. Remember to use the tripod so that you'll be in at least some of the photos.

AC Power Adapters - Do I Really Need Them?

By now you have decided where you want to go info">and if you have read my ac adapter article you know whether or not you need to bring along some ac power adapters. Unfortunately, like many things in life, there are no exact rules governing travel adapters.
I recommend bringing power adapters even if you know your destination uses the same kind of ac plug. Many tropical vacation destinations only have power outlets without a ground. Therefore if you have a grounded plug (like on your laptop) you will need an ac power adapter to convert it for a non-grounded outlet. North Americans please remember that many of your appliances with non-grounded plugs are polarized. (ie. They can only fit in one way). You may need an ac wall adapter in many countries as their outlets will not accept polarized plugs.
If you are traveling to Great Britain you should be extra careful about which ac adapters you bring. Britain doesnt have a standardized system for ac adaptors and actually have several different kinds of wall outlets, so you may need to purchase a travel adapter once you reach your hotel. If you do, you can find foreign plug adapters at the local hardware store.
These ac wall adapters are relatively cheap and I recommend bringing several with you. Power adapters are easy to lose and fellow travelers will want to borrow an adapter from you. Always carry at least one ac adapter with you at all times maybe in your backpack - because you dont want to be caught without a power adapter when you need it. The big dream of most young children is to go to Disney Land or Disney World. This vacation, though, can cost you an arm and a leg! How do you keep it affordable and please the kids? There are several things you can do to limit your costs and enjoy a great Disney vacation.
First, know your budget. Know what is the most you can spend. Many people often rack up large debts from a trip to Disney and that is just not wise. So, knowing what you can and cant afford is the most important factor.
Then, you can start considering the large expenses for your Disney vacation. Begin with how you will get there as that is one of the most expensive parts of your Disney Land or Disney World vacation. Flying is most likely the means of transportation that you will have to utilize. But, is it more cost effective to drive? Even if it does take eight or more hours, it may be a great way of cutting costs. Also, flying at odd times of the day and week can help to lower this cost.
So, youre there, now what? Accommodations are often the next major cost in a Disney Vacation. Cut down on this by not staying at the location itself, but maybe a few miles out. Another way is to book your Disney Land or Disney World vacation at off peak times not during peak parts of the year for visitors. For example, traveling in the summer or during spring break is often the most crowded allowing hotels to charge more since lodging is harder to fine. Cutting down on meals is next. Perhaps you can cut down on breakfast by bringing cold cereal and milk to your hotel room?
Or, pack a sack lunch for while you visit the Disney resort. Cut down on the amount of drinks you buy by purchasing a water bottle and then refilling it at the water fountains. There are many such things you can do to cut your expenses. You can do the same thing with snacks.
Okay, so planning your Disney Land or Disney World vacation may seem like a bigger hassle, but it really is worth the extra effort. Cutting a few dollars here and there will put more money in your pocket for extra attractions or that special toy to remember the trip.
